Ewert and The Two Dragons’ last concert – in the beginning there was hope, in the end there is love.
In the beginning, there was hope. Ewert Sundja, Erki Pärnoja and Kristjan Kallas formed the band in 2008, mainly playing covers, with original compositions being tried out in front of the public very infrequently and timidly. The band’s name referred to three men, the founding members, Ewert and The Two Dragons, but in 2009, Ivo Etti joined the group. With the first album released the same year, the first outlines of the band started to emerge.
Then came stardom. The second album titled Good Man Down conquered the Baltics and Scandinavia, being a turning point in the band’s career. Domestic borders became too narrow, ambitions grew, people’s love for the band rose through the roof, and it seemed that Estonian pop rock was about to conquer the world, or at least a large part of Europe. The first single from the album, “(In The End) There’s Only Love”, became a hit in Estonia – it had everything to capture the hearts, attention and empathy of tens and hundreds of thousands of people. They had become a phenomenon, a sensation of pop culture.
This record and especially the love single took them to Europe, performing at all the major and more important festivals, with the number of fans growing every day. They became stars; their rise to fame was something unprecedented for an Estonian band.
In 2016, they played to more than 6,000 people at Saku Suurhall. This showcased extraordinary courage and confidence for an Estonian band, but Ewert and The Two Dragons had reason to have more than confidence in themselves, and above all their fans. Over the years, the fans’ love for the band, their music and the atmosphere the band creates has grown extraordinary. The hall was sold out in a flash.
In the end, there is love. In 2023, the band decides to split up. A lot has been achieved together and the world is full of new challenges. But they know, as one of their most famous songs – “(In The End) There’s Only Love” – says, in the end, there is always love. So it is with them towards their fans as well as with the fans towards them. Love is one of the most powerful feelings in the world, and Ewert and The Two Dragons will share this never-waning feeling with their fans for the last time on 18 July at the Tartu Song Festival Stage.
